An Bhliain Spórtúil
We are very proud of the fantastic sporting year we have had here at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh. We are very lucky to be situated in the heart of the city and just a five minute walk from St. Mary’s rugby club and Grove Island leisure centre. We would like to extend our thanks to the proprietors and directors of these magnificent, highly modern facilities.
Everyone has worked very hard to provide the best sporting opportunities for the students at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh. The pupils are involved in as many competitions as possible and we have spent €4,500 on top quality gear for all sports.
Our sporting enthusiasm was very evident this year when the first student who arrived in Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh was taken for lunch with the Munster rugby team.
The importance of sport at Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh was reinforced throughout the year as sporting heroes Ciarán Carey, Jerry Flannery, Ian Dowling and Alan Quinlan visited the college to give the students some information and advice.
The specially organised visit of Michéal Ó Muircheartaigh to Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh provided a wonderful insight into the proud tradition of Gaelic games in our county and country as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge. Mr. Ó Muircheartaigh and pupils engaged in a very interesting debate about our country’s hurling and football stars, and recounted glorious occasions of breath-taking excitement of matches played.
Limerick’s own Ciarán Carey noted “It’s tough at the beginning but if you keep the heads up and believe in yourselves you could have the best hurling team in the city in three years time.”
It is amazing to think that a school with just thirty students could field teams in soccer, football, hurling, boy’s basketball and girl’s basketball this year. In addition to fielding these teams we also had tremendous success in beating several high profile sporting schools in the city and county. Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh have left a very clear mark in the city and county’s sporting arena that there is now a new force to be reckoned with over the next few years.

Munster Rugby
We have fantastic links with Munster rugby. Johnny Lacey the Youth Development officer visits the school regularly and invited a student for lunch with the Munster rugby team the first day of school. During induction week our first years met Irish hooker Jerry Flannery and Munster player Ian Dowling. These players played rugby with the students, signed autographs and gave the students Munster posters. We have had the pleasure of witnessing the historic moment where Bertie Ahern held the Heineken Cup for the first time here at Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh. The IRFU supply us with a Youth Development Officer who trains rugby and tag rugby for an hour a week.
As part of our PE programme each year group will visit Killaloe Activity Centre every year. This is very valuable for all students as it doesn’t just provide them with skills but develops confidence, self esteem and cooperation.
We went to Killaloe on the 3rd of May 2007. This was a fantastic day thoroughly enjoyed by students and teachers. The students were divided onto groups of seven and did the following water activities in the morning:
- Sailing
- Kayaking
- Canoeing
- Windsurfing
The students ate their packed lunch and in the afternoon they did land activities. This consisted of:
- High ropes
- Archery
- Orienteering
The high ropes were very popular. Many students were very apprehensive to climb to the top at first but after encouragement from their peers every student climbed the ropes. This was a fantastic day. One student said “It was like being in a different country; I can’t wait to go again!”
Plans for next year
We hope to continue our sporting success further next year. We have booked Grove Island and St.Mary’s fantastic new Astro-turf every day at lunch-time and after school. With more students coming into the College next year, we are very confident that there will be significant success in the forth-coming year. Next year we will be able to cater for the following sports:
- Girls Basketball
- Boys Basketball
- Girls Football
- Boys Football
- Boys Soccer
- Girls Soccer
- Rugby
- Tag Rugby
- Hurling
- Athletics
- Hockey
We look forward to next year and encourage students to try new sports and to become involved as much as possible. |
